This is thermal ablation – a minimally invasive procedure to treat the varicose vein. A tiny laser fiber is introduced into the varicose vein. The thermal energy is delivered as it is withdrawn to close the vein. After the varicose vein is closed, blood is re-routed to other normal veins. The procedure is performed in office under local anesthesia. Patients experience minimal pain. The EVLT is mainly used for saphenous veins and large accessory tributary veins. Characteristics include the followings.
- Short, safe and effective procedure
- Resumption of regular activity immediately after procedure – No downtime
- No incision/no scar/no general anesthesia/no hospitalization
- Relief of symptoms, even immediately after procedure
As the procedure is performed under local (Tumescent) anesthesia, patients can resume regular activities immediately after the procedure. The patient is encouraged to walk 15 to 30 minutes before getting on transportation or driving home. The patient can drive without any problem after the laser procedure. Some patients may see bruises on the leg, which is temporary and disappears quickly. Daily walking is suggested for better recovery. Compression stockings should be worn for two weeks mainly during the daytime. A post procedure visit is scheduled 3 or 4 days after the procedure.
Benefits of Laser Ablation
This outpatient procedure is performed in our procedure room. This is a safe, fast simple and effective procedure to close varicose veins including branching varicose veins, superficial saphenous vein and big perforator veins. There is no incision/no scar, and rare complications for this procedure.
We recommend that patients avoid extra heat applied to legs such as sauna hot tubs, lifting more than 15 lb and long flying for 20 days.
