Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

This is a chemical ablation to close varicose veins (> 3 mm in diameter) other than spider or reticular veins. Guided by ultrasound visualization, the sclerosant is precisely placed into the varicose vein, shutting it down down. The foam injection can be used to treat both saphenous and tributary veins, especially the large tributary varicose vein. It is a shorter procedure with much less discomfort than laser ablation.

Recovering Course

This depends on several factors such as vein size, technique, and medication used. Generally, the closed vein will disappear gradually in several weeks to months. If the varicose vein is very superficial and close to the skin, you may temporarily feel firmness when you touch the closed vein. If the vein is just below the skin you may sometimes see the skin pigmentation along the vein path. The skin pigmentation will disappear in several weeks to months.  A follow-up visit is scheduled 5 – 10 days after ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy.

Benefits of Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a quick, safe and effective procedure with closure rate up to 97%. There is no down time and patients are able to return to regular activities immediately after the procedure. However, we recommend that patients avoid extra heat applied to legs such as sauna hot tubs, lifting more than 15 lb, and long flying for 20 days.
